Kinja'd!!!

I spend several days deciphering an indecipherable wiring diagram and tracing wires, cleaning connections, and grounds to figure out why the alternator light on the ‘68 Saab wouldn’t come on.

Only to find out the problem was the bulb was dead. It doesn’t look burnt out, the filament isn’t broken, and the glass is clear - but it will not pass a current. Of course I didn’t think to actually check it beyond looking at it when I started. New bulbs are on the way.

PS: if you ever go to hell, all wiring diagrams look like this.

The only way to ensure the easy solution works is to do all the work for the hard solution anyways

Lighting all the warning light bulbs at startup so you can see if any are dead was definitely a good car innovation.

I remember numbers for colours...now it is called mindful colouring in. Mindful swearing is my reinterpretation...

The TR6 has a bulb about that size for the passenger footwell. It was kind of dodgy for a while; I  always assumed it was something with the socket but eventually found one of the leads from the filament had come unsoldered from the base.

That’s actually a decent looking diagram!

That said, first rule of troubleshooting: check the stupidest, easiest shit first. I do a lot  of electrical troubleshooting in my line of work in industrial/commercial settings, you’d be amazed how many issues people have spent hours on are things like a blown fuse, wire on the wrong terminal, backwards polarity, etc.

The first thing I did was pull the bulb out and look at it. Since it looked fine, I assumed it was, and that something else must be unplugged or dirty somewhere else. Oops. However, along the way I did find some other things that needed to be taken care of, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
